About the Foundation

Our Mission
Board of Directors

The University of Ottawa Heart Institute Foundation is an independent organization motivated by the objectives of the Heart Institute and sanctioned and supported by its own Board of Directors and staff.

In 1969, the University of Ottawa Heart Institute was founded on the dream of creating a top-notch cardiovascular facility to serve the needs of Ottawa and the surrounding region. Over the years, that dream has resulted in a world-class cardiovascular centre that integrates patient care, education, and research under an umbrella of excellence, and shapes the cardiovascular landscape locally, nationally, and internationally.

The generous and loyal philanthropic support of our community has played a central role in shaping the evolution of the Heart Institute, and your support will become even more important and influential.

Our staff works together with countless volunteers who collectively donate thousands of hours every year to support the Heart Institute. We run our business responsibly—well within the accepted Canadian ratio of administrative costs per dollar donated—so that your effort and donations do the most they possibly can for the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.

Our Mission

We are the University of Ottawa Heart Institute Foundation. We are building a $100 million endowment fund for cardiovascular research—one of the largest of its kind—for the Institute. The endowment will allow the Heart Institute to remain at the forefront of cardiovascular research and contribute to the advancement of patient care here and around the world. The campaign is well under way.

Endowments already fund the work of leading physicians and researchers in the form of Chairs, Research Fellowships, and Lectureships. We also finance the acquisition of the latest, most advanced equipment and technology essential to the Institute's work.

We do this by reaching out to the community and working with people like you in many ways—to help create a fulfilling, rewarding experience for you while helping to fulfill the goals and objectives of the Heart Institute.

The Foundation is accountable to our supporters for the way their donations are used. We take this responsibility very seriously and appreciate the level of trust that we are afforded by our donors. Our commitment to you is simple: to treat every donated dollar as if it were our own, to invest every gift wisely and for the benefit of patients and staff, and if specified, to use as directed by you.

We work to maintain reasonable fundraising costs, and it is a practice strictly adhered to by everyone up to and including our Board. Quarterly reviews are conducted to ensure that costs of fundraising are in line with regulated governmental standards.
