You Make a Difference – Research
“It is not feasible to have excellent patient care without research.”
Dr. Robert Roberts, President and CEO
“The heart has tremendous potential for regeneration, but so much remains to be understood. We are still just scratching the surface. This work helps us understand what we need to achieve.”
Dr. Marc Ruel, Director, Cardiac Surgery Laboratory Research
“Unless prevention is stepped up, the demands of this generation on the cardiovascular health care system may prove overwhelming.”
Robert Reid, Associate Director, Minto Prevention and Rehabilitation Centre
Some Successes You Made Possible
- The team at the Ruddy Canadian Cardiovascular Genetics Centre was the first to discover a gene directly related to heart disease.
- Dr. Marc Ruel found new ways to regenerate blood vessels and heart tissue, and pioneered new surgical techniques that are already benefiting patients.
- Dr. Michael Gollob helped to develop the country’s first standard genetic autopsy protocol to identify unexplained cardiac deaths in young people that could be the result of a gene disorder.
- Dr. Rob Beanlands, a national leader in cardiac imaging, is being funded by the Goldfarb Chair in Cardiac Imaging to investigate how heart disease alters the function of molecules in the heart, with the objective of diagnosing and treating heart disease before the symptoms appear.
How You Make Success Possible
Chairs: Our most prestigious award to our finest physicians and researchers
Research Fellowships: For the next generation of elite researchers
Lectureships: For other international experts to visit the Institute to encourage networking and collaboration
Personal Endowments: For ongoing annual support of patient care, education, and research priorities
Endowed Chairs allow the Institute to attract and support top-calibre physician-researchers who also have teaching appointments at the University of Ottawa. Chairs bring prestige and recognition to the researcher as well as to the Institute from the wider medical community and honour the Institute’s major donors.
With your support, we have established the following Chairs for the Institute’s most highly respected physician-researchers:
- Dr. Marc Ruel—Chair in Cardiac Surgery Research
- Dr. Robert Beanlands—Saul and Edna Goldfarb Chair in Cardiac Imaging Research
- Dr. Robert Roberts—Gordon F. Henderson Chair in Leadership
- Dr. Ruth McPherson—Merck Frosst Canada Chair in Atherosclerosis Research
- Dr. Frans Leenen—Pfizer Chair in Hypertension Research
- Dr. Thierry Mesana—Michael Pitfield Chair in Cardiac Surgery
- Dr. Terence Ruddy—Vered Chair in Cardiology
Endowed Research Fellowships help develop Canada’s upcoming generation of cardiovascular experts and give selected physicians and post-doctoral staff the opportunity to become researchers and academicians, and to focus on a particular topic.
With your support, we have established the following Research Fellowships:
- Dr. Gele Liu—Fellowship in Cardiovascular Genetics Research
