Changing Healthcare
Our population is growing older and requires increasing care. In the Champlain region alone, over 60 per cent of the population will exceed the age of 50 in the next 25 years. With this, comes a need to treat increasingly older patients who will suffer from multiple chronic diseases.
At the same time, Canadians are generally living longer and healthier lives. As the population ages and medical advances convert life-threatening diseases into chronic illnesses, our system of care faces a growing burden.
In cardiovascular terms, more people are living with heart disease and so require care over an extended period. As a result, more care must be done in partnership with other health organizations to ensure an overriding “quality of care” for patients with chronic diseases.
We have a long history of developing one-of-a-kind programs to serve the Champlain region, the province and the country and we will continue to do so. We are working closely with the Champlain LHIN (Local Health Integration Network) and health care providers throughout the region and beyond to optimize cardiovascular care and treatment anywhere in the region using a variety of models and approaches.
Our STEMI, telehealth, heart failure and smoking cessation programs are just a few examples of new ways of delivering care that have been developed here. Working with partners, we continue to seek new ways of coping with chronic illness and changing health care environment.
