Co-operative Education Programs

Undergraduate Students

The Biomedical Engineering Division supervises and teaches aspiring biomedical and clinical engineers and biomedical technologists through undergraduate cooperative education placements and internships. These placements provide students with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and enhanced education in a health care setting.

High School Students

Co-op education offers students the opportunity to gain skills and practical experience, as well as get exposure to research programs conducted by the Heart Institute.A student's interests, skill, and values are the three main principles that will help to determine whether scientific research will be a suitable career path. Co-operative program disciplines at the Heart Institute are provided in following disciplines:

  • Cardiac Endocrinology
  • Cardiovascular Devices
  • Genetics
  • Lipoproteins and Atherosclerosis
  • Hypertension
  • Vascular Biology
  • Cardiac Imaging
  • Clinical Research Trials

Co-operative education at the Heart Institute is an essential part of helping students determine a vocation based on personal aptitude, intellectual challenge and interest. Co-op positions are unpaid.

Requirements

All applicants must contact their co-op teachers at their school. The co-op teacher will refer them to Mercedes Kuroski de Bold and forward their résumés. The Heart Institute will contact the selected candidates for an interview. There are no deadlines and sessions are organized in groups of three students.

In order to work at the Heart Institute, you will be asked to:

  • Sign a Confidentiality Agreement
  • Carry a photo ID badge to access restricted areas
  • Follow a Health & Safety course offered by the Institute
  • Report absence promptly

Sanofi BioGENEius Challenge

The Sanofi BioGENEius Challenge features the outstanding work of high school and CGEP students in Canada who have conducted research projects and experiments of their own design in biotechnology. Top projects are chosen to compete at a regional and national level. The University of Ottawa Heart Institute is a proud supporter of this program.
