Overview

Dr. Benjamin Chow is Staff Cardiologist in the Division of Cardiology, Department of Medicine, at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute and The Ottawa Hospital; member of the Associate Staff, Division of Nuclear Medicine, Department of Medicine, The Ottawa Hospital; and also Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine and Radiology at the University of Ottawa.

He is also Co-Director of Cardiac Radiology and Director of Cardiac Imaging Postgraduate Training at the Heart Institute.

Background

Dr. Chow obtained a BSc with Distinction in Life Sciences in 1992 and his MD in 1996 from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. He was certified as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC) in Internal Medicine in 2000, and Cardiology in 2002. He completed training in Nuclear Cardiology and Cardiac PET at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.  Subsequently he was a Visiting Scientist at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where he gained experience in Cardiac CT.

Among his many grants over the years, Dr. Chow was awarded $900,000 by the Ontario Research Foundation and $300,000 from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research in 2007.

Dr. Chow was the first Canadian cardiologist with advanced training in cardiac computed tomography (CT). He established the first dedicated Canadian Cardiac CT Program with active research and clinical components. In recognition of his dedication to education, research and clinical care, the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Medicine, awarded him the Young Professor Award in 2006. This award is presented annually to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to research and education.
