Overview
Dr. Benjamin Sohmer is an Anesthesiologist and Fellowship Coordinator in the Division of Cardiac Anesthesiology at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute and Assistant Professor in the Division of Anesthesiology at the University of Ottawa.
Background
Dr. Sohmer completed a BSc in Anatomy and Cell Biology at McGill University in Montreal in 1996. In 2000, he earned his MD from Dalhousie University in Halifax. In 2005, he went on to gain certification as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC) in Anesthesiology at the University of Ottawa, and he completed a Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.
While studying at the Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Sohmer completed training in Transesophageal Echocardiography and was certified in Perioperative Transesophageal Echocardiography by the National Board of Echocardiography in 2006.
He returned to Ottawa in 2006 as an Associate Staff, Department of Anesthesiology, at The Ottawa Hospital and joined the Division of Cardiac Anesthesia at the Heart Institute as Assistant Professor of Anesthesia in 2007.
