Overview
Daniel Sparks is Director of the Lipids and Inflammation Laboratory at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute and Assistant Professor in both the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and the Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Ottawa.
Background
Daniel Sparks trained in Lipid Metabolism and Cardiovascular Disease at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver and received a PhD in Pathology in 1989. In 1990, he received a Medical Research Council Post-doctoral Fellowship to undertake lipoprotein research at the Medical College of Pennsylvania. In 1993, he joined the Lipoprotein and Atherosclerosis Group at the Heart Institute as an Assistant Professor.
He was awarded a Research Scholarship from the Medical Research Council and Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada in 1994. In 2000, he received a Career Investigator Award from the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario. He has received research grants from the Canadian Institutes for Health Research and the Heart and Stroke Foundation, and has published two books, 50 papers in refereed journals, and 67 abstracts and presentations.
He founded the biopharmaceutical company, Liponex Inc., in 2000, with intellectual property derived from research discoveries at the Heart Institute, and was its Chief Science Officer until 2008.
