Overview
Yves Marcel is Director of the HDL Biology Laboratory at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. He is also a cross-appointed Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and the Department of Biochemistry, Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Ottawa.
Background
Marcel earned his first degree in Science at the Université de Rouen. In 1961, he obtained a diploma in Chemical Engineering from the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Toulouse and one in Chemistry and Physics from the Université de Toulouse. That year he joined the Faculty of Medicine at the Université de Toulouse as a Biochemistry Assistant.
After completing his Doctorate in Biochemistry in 1965, he worked for two years as a Research Fellow at Hormel Institute at the University of Minnesota. Two years later, he served as Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine and Senior Scientist in the Clinical Research Institute at the Université de Montréal. He became Director of the Laboratory of Lipoprotein Metabolism in 1973, serving in this role for 19 years. He also held the position of Professor in the Department of Medicine. Marcel became Associate Member of the Department of Experimental Medicine at McGill University in Montreal in 1981.
Since 1992, he has also been Director of the Atherosclerosis, Genetics and Cell Biology Lab, formerly know as the Lipoprotein and Metabolism Laboratory . Marcel also served as Chief Scientific Officer and Vice President of Research for the Heart Institute until 2003.
Yves Marcel was awarded the Royal Society of Canada’s McLaughlin Medal in 1997 and the Ottawa Life Sciences Basic Research Award in 2001.
