Overview

Dr. Michael Bourke practices Cardiac Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. In 1995, he was appointed Medical Director of the Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit and served continuously in that role until April 2009.

Dr. Bourke is Assistant Professor at the University of Ottawa, where he lectures regularly in the Physics, Respiratory and Cardiovascular Core Programs of the Department of Anesthesiology, and also in the Critical Care Training Program.

BACKGROUND

Dr. Bourke completed his medical training at the University of Ottawa in 1975. He initially completed Family Medicine training (CCFP) in 1977, and then completed his Anesthesiology specialty as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC) in 1980.

After a clinical fellowship at The Ottawa Hospital (Civic Campus) in 1980, Dr. Bourke joined the Department of Anesthesia at The Ottawa Hospital (Civic Campus) and soon joined the Division of Cardiac Anesthesiology at the Heart Institute (1981). From 1980 until 2002, he directed the Physics and Fluids Core Program, Department of Anesthesiology, University of Ottawa. Between 1980 and 1988, he was Co-Director of the Chronic Pain Clinic at The Ottawa Hospital (Civic Campus). He also provided anesthesia for pediatric cardiac surgery at the Heart Institute before the Pediatric Program at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario was developed. He is Chairman of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute Peri-operative Database Unit. He was an initial member and continues to be a member of the Pulmonary Thromboendarterectomy Program.
