Overview

An accomplished director, manager, and consultant for both clinical and biomedical engineering, Mr. Zakutney has an extensive background in information and medical device technology and its application in research and clinical settings. Currently, Mr. Zakutney is Manager of Biomedical Engineering at the world renowned University of Ottawa Heart Institute, providing leadership and guidance surrounding medical and biomedical technology issues for healthcare. He has served as Director and Manager of Biomedical Engineering teams at two major Canadian academic hospitals and, as an established system development consultant, has developed and implemented software systems for several University and HealthCare research programs.

Background

Mr. Zakutney is a Professional Engineer with a specialty in Systems Design from the University of Waterloo along with a Masters in Heath Science in Clinical Engineering from the University of Toronto. He is also an internationally Certified Clinical Engineer (CCE). Memberships include the American College of Clinical Engineering, and he sits on the Executive Committee for the Canadian Medical and Biological Engineering Society. Mr. Zakutney has sat on two scientific advisory committees for Health Canada and has provided consultation services to Health Canada, Food and Drug Administration, and the Office of the Auditor General of Canada on medical device, health technology issues, and patient safety.

He was acknowledged by his peers by being awarded the 2008 Canadian Medical and Biological Engineering Society’s (CMBES) Outstanding Canadian Biomedical Engineer of the Year Award for his accomplishments and “Contributions to the Canadian Biomedical Engineering Community.”

In August 2009, he traveled to Bangladesh at the request of the Government of Canada (Canadian International Development Agency) to provide assistance and guidance for the rational use and management of medical technology in Bangladesh.

Mr. Zakutney teaches Clinical Engineering in the Department of Systems and Computer Engineering at Carleton University. He sits on the Canadian Board of Examiners for Certification in Clinical Engineering (CCE) and is currently Chairman of the Awards Committee for the Canadian Medical and Biological Engineering Society.
