Heart Institute Auxiliary

Volunteers are an essential part of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. Each year, the Auxiliary operates in lockstep with the Heart Institute to provide essential services.

Some 150 volunteers contribute more than 18,000 hours of service each year and support nearly every aspect of Heart Institute activities. In addition, the Auxiliary generates funds that go directly toward the purchase of medical equipment.

The primary role of our volunteers is providing support to patients and their families, to visitors, and to the nursing and medical staff. Members of the Auxiliary can be found at information desks, in clinics and in intensive care areas. The Atrium Boutique—the Heart Institute's lobby gift shop—is entirely managed by Auxiliary volunteers.

Our volunteers help to make the Heart Institute the leading cardiovascular centre in the country. Please consider joining us.

Ottawa Heart Institute Alumni

The Alumni offers one way for former Heart Institute patients to stay involved with the Institute. The group’s activities include a lecture series, awards, and a newsletter, all dedicated to sharing information about the Heart Institute, cardiovascular medicine, heart disease, and healthy living.

Ottawa Heart Support Group

The Ottawa Heart Support Group is an active group of heart patients who want to improve the quality of life for themselves and fellow patients and families by sharing experiences and improving awareness and understanding of various heart conditions.

The group’s objective is to reduce the fear, anxiety, and emotional stress that is often the result of having a serious health problem. We focus on developing positive attitudes, recognizing that laughter is often the best medicine.

Meetings are held on the third Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. at the Heart Institute. Other activities are organized as desired by the members.
