Cardiovascular Tissue Engineering Laboratory
Overview

One aim of Dr. Suuronen’s research is to recruit the body’s stem cells for growing new blood vessels. Arrows show human cells that have homed to ischemic rat muscle treated with an enhanced matrix.
The Cardiovascular Tissue Engineering Laboratory is part of Cardiac Surgery's Biomaterials and Regeneration Research Program. The primary goal is to develop tissue engineering and cell-based therapeutic approaches for the treatment of cardiac injury and disease.
The lab provides training opportunities for students to perform research in pursuit of their degrees at all levels with the University of Ottawa. Funding for the lab is provided by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Canada, and the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.
