The Champlain Cardiovascular Profile
Local Health Integration Networks (LHINs) in Ontario are responsible for planning, coordinating, and funding health care. In the Champlain region, the LHIN funds 21 hospitals and seven community health centres, plus satellites, 61 long-term care homes, the Champlain Community Care Access Centre, and more than 100 Community Support Services, including mental health and addictions agencies.
The Champlain LHIN is home to approximately 1,147,000 people, or 9 per cent of the population of Ontario. It encompasses a large geographical area that includes Renfrew County; the City of Ottawa; Prescott and Russell; Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry; North Grenville; and four parts of North Lanark (Beckwith, Carleton Place, Mississippi Mills, and Lanark Highlands).
Population & Risk Factors
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the single leading cause of death, disability, and hospitalization in our province and across the Champlain region. The number of deaths caused by CVD is expected to double by 2018 as a result of an aging demographic population growth and increasing prevalence of CVD risk factors.
Significant differences in the rates of CVD mortality and CVD risk factors exist within the district. Three regions within the Champlain LHIN have been identified as Ontario hot spots for CVD morbidity and mortality, with rates well above the City of Ottawa and the provincial average. In these three county regions—the Eastern counties, Renfrew, and Leeds, Grenville, and Lanark—rates of several key CVD risk factors are significantly higher than the provincial average.
