Diabetes and Atherosclerosis Laboratory
Overview
Diabetes imparts a two- to fourfold increase in the risk of developing coronary artery disease, with cardiovascular disease accounting for 70 per cent of deaths in patients with diabetes. In addition to cardiovascular disease, other very serious complications of diabetes include diabetic nephropathy, diabetic retinopathy, and diabetic neuropathy.
Several years ago, the principal theme of our laboratory changed from lipoprotein metabolism to diabetic complications and, specifically, the role of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) in diabetic cardiovascular disease.
