Honorary associates consist of those individuals or entities who have demonstrated exceptional commitment or excellence in the areas relating to the objects of the Institute, or are of special character, and whom the Board of Directors wishes to appoint.
Dr. Donald Beanlands graduated from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, as a gold medallist and completed his postgraduate medical training at Dalhousie and the University of Toronto. Dr. Beanlands was appointed to the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto in 1962, and he became Chief of Cardiology at the Toronto Western Hospital. In 1977, he initiated the development of the Division of Cardiology at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. He was Chief of the Division of Cardiology for 19 years and Professor of Medicine at the University of Ottawa. Dr. Beanlands has been instrumental in the development of the Cardiology Division and teaching programs at the Heart Institute.
