Position Overview:

The University of Ottawa Heart Institute is Canada’s largest and foremost cardiovascular health centre dedicated to understanding, treating and preventing heart disease. The Brain and Heart Nexus Research Program within the UOHI has a particular emphasis on the brain-heart interface using innovative approaches to analytic epidemiology and the use of large population-based databases for risk prediction (primary and secondary) in cardiovascular disease.

This position will afford the Fellow opportunities to gain and contribute knowledge to the area of cardiovascular epidemiology.

Some of the current research projects include:

  • cerebrovascular risk estimation and prediction in early cardiac remodeling;
  • women’s heart and brain health;
  • risk assessment and cognitive screening in cardiac clinical populations; and,
  • long-term cerebrovascular outcomes post-cardiac surgery.

Responsibilities:

It is expected the successful candidate will assume responsibility for the preparation and publication of manuscripts, as well as assist in the submission of research grant applications.

The fellow will have the opportunity to work with administrative databases housed within I.C.E.S and participate in training and educational activities (e.g., Grand Rounds, Clinical Research Rounds and Work-in-Progress Rounds; National and International conferences), with  support from our Research Services Department and Cardiovascular Methods Centre.

Preferred Qualifications:

The successful candidate will possess:

  • a Ph.D. degree in epidemiology or relevant health-related field (biostatistics).
  • a strong understanding of clinical research design, research methodology and data analysis.
  • advanced statistical training and knowledge of statistical software packages (R, SAS, SPSS).
  • demonstrated experience analyzing datasets.
  • evidence of experience in preparation and publication of manuscripts; strong technical writing skills.
  • excellent oral communication and technical writing skills in English.
  • excellent computing skills (Microsoft Office, EndNote).
  • the ability to take guided initiatives and to work in an organized fashion within a fast-paced research environment, including flexibility in shifting between independent and collaborative work.
  • previous research experience within a team environment.
  • the ability to work collegially in an exciting and dynamic research environment.
  • demonstrated professionalism and interpersonal skills.

The position is a one-year fellowship with the possibility of extension contingent on performance and includes 3 weeks paid holidays and paid statutory holidays. While funding for this position has been secured through the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, successful applicant will be encouraged to apply for independent postdoctoral fellowships.

The successful candidate will register as a Postdoctoral Fellow with the University of Ottawa Faculty of Medicine to access travel grants, campus health services, sport and library services, and purchase supplemental health and dental insurance.
