Together, research activity at The Ottawa Hospital and the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI) totalled $137 million in 2016-17, up from $129 million the previous year. With their results being combined, this places them in fifth spot among all hospitals in Canada for research activity, or sixth spot when provincial health authorities are included. This data was released today by Research Infosource.
“We’re very proud to be ranked as one of the top research hospitals in Canada,” said Dr. Duncan Stewart, Executive Vice-President of Research at The Ottawa Hospital and professor at the University of Ottawa. “In recent years, we’ve seen particular growth in research areas such as regenerative medicine and cancer immunotherapy, as well as in clinical trials and knowledge translation. This research is providing our patients with new treatment options and giving us the tools to continuously improve quality, safety and efficiency of care.”
“The strength of cardiovascular research in Ottawa contributes to this high ranking,” said Dr. Peter Liu, Chief Scientific Officer and Vice-President of Research at the UOHI. “Our Institute’s researchers, clinical care professionals and staff are working relentlessly together in bringing ground-breaking work from bench to bedside to ultimately benefit our patients.”
Notable research successes from The Ottawa Hospital and the UOHI from the last year include:
- Launch of a world-first clinical trial using a novel kind of immunotherapy to prevent cancer from coming back after surgery.
- Development of a clinical decision rule to help detect bleeding in the brain – an innovation that could save more than 65 lives per year in Canada.
- Discovery of a new way to stimulate blood vessel repair and regeneration – a strategy that could lead to new treatments for stroke, heart attack and other diseases.
- A study into the physical activity levels of Ontario nurses made big waves nationwide when news broke suggesting nurses may not be as healthy as we once believed.
