Patient Support Groups

UOHI volunteersHeart Institute Auxiliary

Volunteers are an essential part of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. Each year, the Auxiliary operates in lockstep with the Heart Institute to provide essential services.

Some 200 volunteers contribute more than 20,000 hours of service each year and support nearly every aspect of Heart Institute activities. In addition, the Auxiliary generates funds that go directly toward the purchase of medical equipment.

The primary role of our volunteers is providing support to patients and their families, to visitors, and to the nursing and medical staff. Members of the Auxiliary can be found at information desks, in clinics and in intensive care areas. The Atrium Boutique—the Heart Institute’s lobby gift shop—is entirely managed by Auxiliary volunteers.

Our volunteers help to make the Heart Institute the leading cardiovascular centre in the country. Please consider joining us. For more information, contact:

Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) Support Group

The ICD Support Group is free and open to all ICD patients and their partners. The meetings provide the opportunity to meet and interact with other ICD patients in an informal setting. Many sessions feature guest speakers on a variety of heart health topics.

The group meets on the second Thursday of the month, 10 times a year from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. in the East Foustanellas Auditorium located on the second floor of the Heart Institute.

Upcoming meetings and topics can be found on the Heart Institute calendar. For more information, contact:

The Ottawa Heart Institute Patient Alumni offers one way for former Heart Institute patients to stay involved with the Institute. The group’s activities include a lecture series, awards and a newsletter, all dedicated to sharing information about the Heart Institute, cardiovascular medicine, heart disease, and healthy living. All patients, upon discharge, automatically become members of the Patient Alumni.

Our Online Community

Please join us at, our specially designed website where like minded people of Ottawa Heart Institute patients, family, friends and caregivers can come together to meet online. It is a place where you can share your stories, post comments, and find support from others who know first hand what it is like to be a patient at the Heart Institute.

Ottawa Heart Support Group

The Ottawa Heart Support Group (OHSG) is dedicated to reducing the anxiety and emotional stress that often results from having a cardiac event. The OHSG focuses on developing positive attitudes toward heart health care, enjoying life to the fullest, and supporting one another.

These objectives are pursued at monthly meetings with interesting and informative speakers from all disciplines and through other heart-related activities. Many of these speakers are from the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.

The OHSG is growing and always looking for new members. Incorporated in 2004, the Group was established to meet the needs of cardiac patients, their families and other interested persons by offering support and encouragement in a friendly educational environment.

Monthly Meetings Meetings are held on the third Monday of each month at 7:15 p.m. at the Heart Institute. Other activities are organized as desired by the members.

Parking is free after 7:00 p.m. at the meters on Ruskin Street
