At the Heart Institute, we do extraordinary things extraordinarily well. Our pursuit of excellence and commitment to quality is widely recognized and routinely honoured through important awards, accolades, and other forms of acknowledgement at local, national, and international levels..

Here is a brief selection of ways in which our people are recognized for their care, compassion, and dedication for what they do.

2016

  • Innovation Fund Award

    The Heart Institute received the Innovation Fund Award for the project “Heart Failure Telelink: Using Interactive Voice Response (IVR) Technology to improve Patient Outcomes.” IVR is one of two remote monitoring strategies used by the Heart Institute to follow over 2,000 heart failure patients in the community.  

2015

  • Canadian Cardiovascular Society Research Achievement Award

    Rob BeanlandsRob Beanlands, Chief of Cardiology, received the CCS honour in recognition of his important contributions to cardiovascular research throughout his career. He is an international expert in cardiac imaging and a leader in establishing positron emission tomography (PET) imaging as an accepted tool in the diagnosis and management of heart disease.

  • Canadian Cardiovascular Society Young Investigator Award

    Cardiologist Thais Coutinho, MD, is early in her career but is already establishing an international reputation in the areas of arterial stiffness and heart disease in women. The CCS Young Investigator Award adds to her numerous honours.

  • Best Health Nurse Excellence Award

    Joanne Morin, APN for adult congenital heart disease, received the Best Health Nurse Excellence Award from Best Health Magazine. Morin was one of three nurses in Canada selected for their outstanding compassion and dedication to their work.

2014

  • Lumen Global Achievement Award

    Dr. Michel Le May received the Lumen Global Achievement Award for his novel strategies in heart attack management, his development of the Heart Institute’s Regional STEMI Program and his landmark contributions in demonstrating decreased mortality with direct STEMI heart attack transfers.

2013

  • Royal Society of Canada

    Dr. Robert Roberts  was made a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the fields of cardiovascular biochemistry, molecular biology and genetics.

  • Elected to the National Academy of Sciences of Argentina

    Adolfo de Bold was elected to the National Academy of Sciences of Argentina for his contributions to the advancement of science.

  • Hermann Blumgart Award

    Dr. Rob Beanlands received the Hermann Blumgart Award from the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging for contributions to nuclear cardiology.

  • Lumen Global Achievement Award

2012

  • CCS Annual Achievement Award

    Dr. Lyall Higginson won the CCS Annual Achievement Award in recognition of outstanding career contributions.

  • Canadian Institutes of Health Research ICRH Distinguished Scientist

    Dr. Peter Liu was chosen as the Canadian Institutes of Health Research ICRH Distinguished Scientist.

  • Canadian Society of Atherosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology Scientific Award of Excellence

    Dr. Ruth McPherson received the Canadian Society of Atherosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology Scientific Award of Excellence.

  • The Canadian Nuclear Cardiology Society

    Dr. Benjamin Chow was selected by the Canadian Nuclear Cardiology Society as its annual Robert Burns Memorial Lecturer.

  • Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship

    Dr. Girish Dwivedi was awarded a Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship, the most prestigious post doctoral fellowship award in Canada.

  • Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal

    Dr. Rob Beanlands was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for his significant contributions and achievements.

  • Canadian Cardiovascular Society’s Research Achievement Award

    Dr. Robert Roberts  received the Canadian Cardiovascular Society’s Research Achievement Award.

2011

  • Faculty of Medicine Award for Distinction and Service

    Dr. Ben Chow received the University of Ottawa 2011 Faculty of Medicine Award for Distinction and Service.

  • Special Recognition Award

    Dr. Ruth McPherson was honoured by the American Heart Association Council on Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology with its Special Recognition Award.

2010

  • Canada Graduate Scholarships - Doctoral Research Award

    Drew Kuraitis won the Frederick Banting and Charles Best Canada Graduate Scholarships - Doctoral Research Award from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.

  • Women in Cardiology Trainee Award for Excellence

    Dr. Nina Ghosh received the Women in Cardiology Trainee Award for Excellence from the American Heart Association.

  • Dr. Harold N. Segall Award of Merit

    Dr. Andrew Pipe received the Dr. Harold N. Segall Award of Merit from the Canadian Cardiovascular Society in recognition of his significant contributions to the prevention of cardiovascular disease or the promotion of cardiovascular health.

  • Distinguished Teacher Award

    Dr. Martin Green received the Distinguished Teacher Award from the Canadian Cardiovascular Society in recognition of his long-time commitment to educating and inspiring trainee physicians.  

  • Knowledge Translation Award

    Tofy Mussivand received the Knowledge Translation Award from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research for his outstanding contributions to the health of Canadians and to the health system.

2009

  • Capital Educator Award

    Dr. Michael Froeschl won a Capital Educator Award for 2009 from the Ottawa Centre for Research and Innovation.

  • New Member of the Cardiovascular Council (CVC)

    Dr. Terry Ruddy was elected as a new member of the Cardiovascular Council (CVC) of the Board of Directors for the Society of Nuclear Medicine.

  • Doris and Howard Polk Award

    Ann-Yeong Chong won the Doris and Howard Polk Award for the Best Clinical Science Presentation for his work on STEMI.

  • Merck Frosst Award

    Olga Jarinova won the Merck Frosst Award for the Best Basic Science Presentation for her genetic research on the 9p21 chromosome.

  • CIHR-CMAJ Top Canadian Achievements in Health Research Award

    Dr. Adolof de Bold and Dr. Michel Le May received the CIHR-CMAJ Top Canadian Achievements in Health Research Award.

  • University of Ottawa Heart Institute Auxiliary's 2009 W.J. Keon Award

    Dr. Vincent Chan , cardiac surgery resident, won the University of Ottawa Heart Institute Auxiliary’s 2009 W.J. Keon Award

  • Mary Clinckett Alumni Award

    Mr. Mark Cleland , Senior Technologist, Medical Devices, Biomedical Engineering, won the Mary Clinckett Alumni Award.

  • Laureate at the IDG's Computerworld Honors Program

    Dr. Ross Davies was chosen as a Laureate at the IDG’s Computerworld Honors Program in the category of health care for his development of a novel Patient Database Management System in use at the Heart Institute.

2008

  • Distinguished Scientist Award

    George Wells, PhD, received the Distinguished Scientist Award, which is the top honour of the Canadian Society for Clinical Investigation.

  • Published in the New England Journal

    Dr. Michel Le May and his team were published in the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine for his great success with the STEMI program.

  • Paul Cartier Prize for Resident Research

    Dr. Vincent Chan won the Paul Cartier Prize for Resident Research at the Canadian Cardiovascular Society annual meeting. This was the third year in a row that a Heart Institute cardiac surgery resident won this award.

  • Health Innovation Award

    Dr. Ross Davies won a Health Innovation Award from the Ottawa Centre for Research and Innovation. His work on building a novel Patient Database Management System was featured at a recent Life Sciences Awards gala.

  • Canadian Cardiovascular Society Young Investigator Award

    Dr. Alex Kulik won the Canadian Cardiovascular Society Young Investigator Award for his presentation and manuscript on the impact of statin use.

  • McLaughlin Medal from the Royal Society of Canada

    Dr. Robert Roberts received the McLaughlin Medal from the Royal Society of Canada. This national award celebrates important research of sustained excellence in a branch of medical science, and is one of the highest honours in medicine.

  • University of Ottawa Heart Institute Auxiliary's 2007 Mary Clinckett Alumni Award

    Frances Allan, Clinical Nurse Manager for the Hypertension Unit won the University of Ottawa Heart Institute Auxiliary’s 2007 Mary Clinckett Alumni Award. This award recognizes exceptional contributions by Heart Institute nursing, administrative, support, or volunteer personnel.

  • Ottawa Heart Institute Alumni's 2008 Dr. W.J. Keon Award

    Dr. Joel Price , cardiac surgery resident, and Dr. Andrew Ha, cardiology resident, won the Ottawa Heart Institute Alumni’s 2008 Dr. W.J. Keon Award.

  • Albrecht Fleckenstein Memorial Award

    Dr. Robert Roberts was recognized by the International Academy of Cardiology for his achievements in science. Dr. Roberts received the Albrecht Fleckenstein Memorial Award for his “distinguished work in the field of basic research.” This award is presented periodically to recognize outstanding career achievements in basic cardiovascular research. A committee of 130 of the world’s top cardiologists and scientists selects awardees from an international pool of nominees.

  • Frederick Banting and Charles Best Canada Graduate Scholarships-Doctoral Awards

    Emelie Braschi and Joshua Raisman won the Frederick Banting and Charles Best Canada Graduate Scholarships-Doctoral Awards from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research. Raisman was ranked in the top 2 per cent in the Doctoral Award competition.

  • Terrence Donnelly Prize

    Dr. Vincent Chan won the Terrence Donnelly Prize at a national research competition for cardiac surgery residents.

  • Doctoral Award

    Sophia Papadakis won a Doctoral Award from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Strategic Training Program in Tobacco Research.

  • Highest-rated fellow in 2007

    Kevin Sun, PhD, of the Vascular Biology Lab at the Heart Institute, was named the highest-rated fellow in 2007 by the Ontario Heart and Stroke Foundation.

  • Canadian Medical and Biological Engineering Society (CMBES) Outstanding Canadian Biomedical Engineer of the Year Award

    Timothy J.Zakutney won the 2008 Canadian Medical and Biological Engineering Society (CMBES) Outstanding Canadian Biomedical Engineer of the Year Award for his accomplishments and contributions to the Canadian biomedical engineering community.

2007

  • Paul Cartier Award

    Dr. Munir Boodwani received the Paul Cartier Award for his presentation of the Cardiotomy Trial (Dr. Fraser Rubens was the principal investigator) at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress, which draws together most of the country’s heart researchers, doctors, and educators. This was the second consecutive year that a Heart Institute resident received this most prestigious research award for young surgeon-scientists.

  • Golden Medal for Merits in Medicine

    Dr. George Fodor was awarded the country of Slovakia’s top honour-the Golden Medal for Merits in Medicine. The Slovak Medical Society paid special tribute to Dr. Fodor for his continuing contributions in shaping a national cardiovascular strategy and program for this country’s citizens.

  • Whit and Heather Tucker Endowed Research Fellowship in Cardiology

    Dr. Arun Abraham (Supervisor, Dr. Rob Beanlands) was selected to receive the Whit and Heather Tucker Endowed Research Fellowship in Cardiology.

  • W.J. Keon Award

    Dr. Munir Boodhwani, cardiac surgery resident won the 2007 W.J. Keon Award from the Heart Institute Auxiliary.

  • Dr. Evan Patrick Award

    Dr. Nisha D’Mello was presented with the 2007 Dr. Evan Patrick Award, which is given each year to a resident in cardiology or internal medicine at the Heart Institute who displays exemplary compassion toward his or her patients.

  • Mary Clinckett Alumni Award

    Joanne Morin, Nurse Coordinator of the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Clinic won the 2007 Mary Clinckett Alumni Award.

  • Canadian Gold Medal

    Dr. Marc Ruel was awarded the Canadian Gold Medal from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons for his work to restore a failing heart. He is the first cardiovascular surgeon to ever win this award and is the first recipient from the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.

  • Ernest and Margaret Ford Endowed Research Fellowship

    Dr. Kevin Sun (Supervisor, Dr. Ed O’Brien) was selected to receive the Ernest and Margaret Ford Endowed Research Fellowship in Cardiology.
