Electrophysiology of the Heart

  • Cardiac cells at rest are polarized
  • When the cell receives electrical stimulus, an ion shift occurs, and the the cell becomes depolarized
  • In an effort to return to resting state, the cell undergoes repolarization
  • This depolarization-repolarization cycle is known as the action potential and it is this electrical excitation that acts as the signal for cardiac contraction
