A number of Ottawa Heart Institute staff and trainees were honoured at this year’s Canadian Cardiovascular Congress, recognizing their accomplishments at both early and established phases of their careers.
Canadian Cardiovascular Society (CCS) Research Achievement Award
Rob Beanlands, Chief of Cardiology, received the CCS honour in recognition of his important contributions to cardiovascular research throughout his career. He is an international expert in cardiac imaging and a leader in establishing positron emission tomography (PET) imaging as an accepted tool in the diagnosis and management of heart disease. The award is timely as this year marks the 20th anniversary of the National Cardiac PET Centre, which he founded.
CCS Young Investigator Award
Cardiologist Thais Coutinho, MD, is early in her career but is already establishing an international reputation in the areas of arterial stiffness and heart disease in women. Canadian Society of Clinical Perfusion National Perfusion Team Excellence Award
The Heart Institute’s Cardiovascular Perfusion team received a national honour. They were selected for their professional society’s National Perfusion Team Excellence Award in recognition of their contributions, achievements and outstanding work in education, research, innovation.
Canadian Association of Cardiovascular Prevention & Rehabilitation (CACPR) Graduate Scholarship Winner (Masters Level)
Trainee Katelin Gresty was awarded the CACPR Masters Level Graduate Scholarship for her abstract “An Evaluation of Regional Community-based Cardiac Tele-rehab Programs.”
Canadian Society of Echocardiography Bursary Award
Resident Kevin Boczar, MD, won the Bursary Award for top abstract by a cardiology fellow or resident. Read coverage of his research into a new marker of chemotherapy-related cardiotoxicity.<
Bayer-CCS Resident Vascular Research Award (Finalist)
Resident Hadi Toeg, MD, presented as a finalist for the Resident Vascular Research Award for his study “Hybrid Coronary Revascularization in Diabetics (HYCARDS) Randomized Controlled Trial.”
