The University of Ottawa (uOttawa) Faculty of Medicine has bestowed doctors and researchers from the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI) with uOttawa Faculty Member Awards of Excellence in recognition of their outstanding career achievements.
Mentor of the Year – Clinical
Dr. Rob Beanlands, deputy director general of the UOHI, received the award for clinical mentor of the year.
The Mentor of the Year Award – Clinical is presented annually to a faculty member who has demonstrated outstanding mentorship towards learners and/or junior faculty in the Faculty of Medicine and helps inspire and motivate them throughout their program and chosen career. Mentors act as role models and have the potential to shape the learning process and experience.
Researcher of the Year – Biomedical
Dr. Peter Liu, chief research officer and vice president of research services at the UOHI, was named a co-researcher of the year alongside Ruth Slack, PhD, of uOttawa. Dr. Liu and Slack are co-principal investigators for the uOttawa Brain and Mind Research Institute at uOttawa. They accepted the award for their work in biomedical research.
The Researcher of the Year Award – Biomedical is presented annually to an investigator who has earned distinction for their unit and faculty as a result of the importance and exceptional characteristics of their research work.
Researcher of the Year – Public Health and Epidemiology
Jodi Edwards, PhD, a scientist and director of the Brain and Heart Nexus Research Program at the UOHI, was named researcher of the year, receiving the award for research in public health and epidemiology.
The Researcher of the Year Award – Public Health and Epidemiology is presented annually to an investigator who has earned distinction for their unit and faculty as a result of the importance and exceptional characteristics of their research work.
Early-Career Researcher of the Year – Biomedical
Erin Mulvihill, PhD, a scientist and director of the Energy Substrate Metabolism Research Laboratory at the UOHI, was named bio-medical early-career investigator of the year.
The Early Career Researcher of the Year Award – Biomedical is presented annually to an investigator who has earned distinction for their unit and Faculty as a result of the importance and exceptional characteristics of their research work at this stage of career.
Award for leadership in Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Indigeneity, and Accessibility
Emilio Alarcon, PhD, who is a scientist in the Division of Cardiac Surgery and directs the Bio-nanomaterials Chemistry and Engineering Laboratory at the UOHI, received the award for leadership in equity, diversity, inclusion, indigeneity, and accessibility (EDIIA).
The Award for Leadership in Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Indigeneity and Accessibility (EDIIA) is presented annually to a faculty member in recognition of their work for the promotion of EDIIA throughout their research, teaching, administrative, leaderships, and/or advocacy activities at the faculty.
Awards were presented during the Faculty of Medicine Awards and Recognition Gala, held at the Canadian History Museum on November 18.
