Centre canadien de génétique cardiovasculaire Ruddy

Les facteurs génétiques représentent environ 50 % du risque de maladie cardiaque. La recherche cardiovasculaire vise avant tout à mieux comprendre la génétique des maladies du cœur. L’étude des gènes pertinents et de leur fonction enrichit nos connaissances des mécanismes biologiques qui mènent à de telles maladies. À terme, elle nous permet de mieux cibler les interventions de prévention ou de traitement, et elle peut même nous aider à mettre au point de nouvelles épreuves diagnostiques et de nouvelles thérapies.

Le Centre canadien de génétique cardiovasculaire Ruddy, qui se consacre exclusivement à la recherche cardiovasculaire et à la prise en charge clinique des maladies héréditaires du cœur et des vaisseaux, est le premier centre complet de son genre au Canada.

Depuis la découverte en 2007 du locus (ou emplacement sur un chromosome) 9p21 qui prédispose à la maladie du cœur, nous avons, en collaboration avec divers groupes aux quatre coins du monde, identifié plus de 55 autres facteurs génétiques similaires qui ont un effet majeur sur le risque de maladie cardiaque.

Le Centre abrite par ailleurs les installations centrales d’analyse génétique, qui offrent des services de génotypage, de l’équipement spécialisé et de l’expertise technique aux chercheurs de l’Institut de cardiologie de l’Université d’Ottawa, à d’autres chercheurs dans le monde et aux services de génétique statistique.
