The Women@Heart In-patient Support Program is a peer-to-peer support opportunity in the hospital for women recently diagnosed with heart disease. After being diagnosed with heart disease, many women experience feelings of isolation and depression.

Heart Wise Exercise started in Ottawa and is a program of the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. The model has been adapted by several partners who have developed HWE networks in their regions.

The University of Ottawa Heart Institute provides cardiac services for the Champlain Region and is the Regional Coordinating Centre for the Heart Wise Exercise networks in our region, serving Renfrew County, Eastern Counties of Ontario, Leeds, Lanark, Grenville, Toronto, GTA, and the Ottawa area.

Peer leaders are women who have been diagnosed with cardiovascular disease and have a strong passion for supporting and helping other women in their recovery. Leaders must have come to terms with own cardiovascular diagnosis and be physically, emotionally and psychologically ready to help other women.
Pregnancy is often described as a “stress test” that helps identify women who are at risk of developing chronic diseases later in life. To address this important clinical problem, we adapted our CardioPrevent® program to support high-risk women postpartum.
