Minimally invasive cardiac surgery

(Also called: minimally invasive heart surgery)

For patients requiring heart surgery, a minimally invasive approach may be an option.

This unique approach uses small incisions between the ribs to access the heart, as an alternative to the traditional incision through the breastbone (sternum). As a result, there may be less damage to surrounding tissues and therefore less pain and quicker healing.

Our highly skilled team possesses extensive experience and expertise in performing minimally invasive heart surgeries. We are committed to delivering cutting-edge care with confidence, ensuring the best possible outcomes for our patients.

Who can benefit from our procedures?

At the Ottawa Heart Institute, our experienced cardiac surgeons perform a range of minimally invasive heart surgeries, including coronary artery bypass to address blockages in the coronary arteries, and valve replacement and repair to address tight or leaking heart valves.

Advanced robotic technology may be used to enhance precision during these surgeries.

Advantages of minimally invasive heart surgery

  • Less surgical trauma: Smaller incisions mean less pain and smaller scars.
  • Shorter hospital stays: Most patients go home within two to three days after surgery.
  • Faster recovery: Patients generally return to their regular activities sooner compared to open-chest surgery.
  • Decreased blood loss.
  • Lower risk of infection: Smaller incisions can lead to a decreased risk of infection.

"The minimally invasive approach used in my surgery was remarkable, allowing me to recover more quickly with minimal discomfort. The seamless coordination between the surgical and post-operative teams ensured I was always informed, comfortable, and well cared for. It’s not just the technical excellence that stood out, but also the compassion and respect shown to me every step of the way."

Expert care within reach

We aim to make healthcare accessible by offering telehealth consultations for patients who live outside Ottawa.

For those travelling for surgery, accommodation is available at the Residence Corporation located on our hospital campus.

Evaluation for minimally invasive heart surgery

We conduct a thorough evaluation of every patient referred for minimally invasive heart surgery to determine the most appropriate approach. Our primary goal is to ensure a safe procedure with the best possible results.

For treatment of more complicated heart conditions, we may recommend traditional surgery, to achieve the best outcome.
