Four Heart Institute Research Teams Awarded Important CIHR Project Funding

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) has awarded four University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI) research teams with important project funding exceeding a collective $3.2 million for future research that has potential to improve the health of all Canadians.

Below is a list of all awardees from the UOHI.

  • Dr. Sharon Chih and Co-Principal Investigator Dr. George Wells
    Project: Early Initiation of Antiplatelet ThERapy in HeArt TranspLantation - AERIAL Trial.
    Amount: $566,100 over three years.
  • *Dr. Han Kim
    Project: The novel combinatorial role of Irx3 and Irx4 in ventricular non-compaction cardiomyopathy.
    Amount: $742,050 over five years.
  • *Dr. Pablo Nery and Co-Principal Investigators Drs. David Birnie and George Wells
    Project: Characterization of Arrhythmia Substrate to Ablate Persistent Atrial Fibrillation (COAST-AF) Randomized Controlled Trial.
    Amount: $952,426 over five years.
  • Dr. Atul Verma (UOHI affiliate investigator based at Southlake Regional Health Centre) and Co-Principal Investigator Dr. David Birnie
    Project: The Optimal Anticoagulation for Enhanced Risk Patients Post-Catheter Ablation for Atrial Fibrillation (OCEAN) Trial.
    Amount: $956,250 over five years.
