Ottawa scientist to lead AI and data analytics research with transformative potential for health systems

March 13, 2024

Dr. Christopher Sun, an assistant professor at the University of Ottawa (uOttawa) Telfer School of Management and a scientist at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI), is the recipient of a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Data Analytics for Health Systems Transformation.

The Canada Research Chairs Program (CRCP) invests approximately $300 million each year to attract and retain some of the world’s most accomplished and promising minds. Chairholders aim to achieve research excellence in health sciences, engineering, natural sciences, humanities, and social sciences.

Professor Sun’s research program aims to strengthen health care using advanced analytics and artificial intelligence (AI). His program addresses two critical issues: healthcare worker shortages, by enhancing system efficiency, and healthcare inequity, by creating fair AI decision support models.

“With vital support from uOttawa’s Telfer School of Management and the Heart Institute, Dr. Sun’s work will develop innovative tools in areas including operating room scheduling and emergency cardiac event prediction and prevention,” said Dr. Peter Liu, chief scientific officer and vice president of research at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.

“Data analytics and AI have the potential to revolutionize the way we understand and transform health systems in Canada,” said Dr. Sun. “Through data-driven decision making, we can improve health outcomes and develop more equitable and efficient systems.”

Earlier this year, Dr. Sun was awarded more than $1.4M from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research for his project Artificial Intelligence Supported In-Hospital Cardiac Arrest Prediction, Prevention, and Management.
