Dr. Jennifer Reed is an internationally-recognized expert in the field of cardiovascular prevention and rehabilitation, putting UOHI on the global map as a leader in exercise interventions in cardiovascular disease prevention and rehabilitation. In its first year alone, the Cardiac Rehabilitation Rounds series brought scientists from the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Norway to strengthen collaborations with UOHI and Canada, and increase knowledge translation. In turn, she has delivered 18 presentations internationally, with impacts and a unique spirit that is best explained by her nominators:
If you attend an international cardiovascular prevention and rehabilitation meeting that Dr. Reed is also attending, you’ll find a long queue of those wishing to speak with her. Bring a cup of tea, and you will be set! That line isn’t just for conversation—it’s a testament to her global influence, her generosity in sharing knowledge, and the respect she commands across continents.
With nearly $10 million in peer-reviewed research funding, Dr. Reed is investigating physical activity in the prevention and management of arrhythmias; developing novel exercise training strategies for women with cardiovascular disease; and identifying the optimal cardiovascular rehabilitation programs for the unique needs of patients with heart disease. She turns these findings into worldwide practice change through numerous channels, including her leadership on the international steering committee for a multinational multi-morbidity and rehabilitation trial. Her research on the value of Nordic walking for example - Altmetric score of 1069! - is already shaping cardiovascular rehabilitation and health promotion programming worldwide. Committed to the dissemination of her work to broader audiences, Dr. Reed’s research has received widespread media coverage in over 90 international outlets, including the BBC, NBC News, and Physiology News (UK), amplifying the UOHI’s international visibility.
Trainees and visiting scholars come from around the world to work with Dr. Reed, and attract diverse international awards. To address the continued underrepresentation of women in exercise science research and leadership positions, Dr. Reed launched an annual International Student Research Internship for Women which receives dozens of global applications every year.
