Cardiovascular Disease Prevention

Up to 80% of early onset cardiovascular disease can be prevented. Because cardiovascular disease is largely preventable, heart health is within the reach of every Canadian who chooses to take up the challenge.  Nine out of ten individuals older than 20 years of age have at least one risk factor for cardiovascular disease and two in five have three or more of risk factors.

  1. Know, Understand, Act: This presentation pinpoints and describes all the health factors and behaviours that can increase the risk for cardiovascular disease. With this knowledge and understanding, we are better able to take preventive action against cardiovascular disease in our own lives. We therefore live longer; experience dramatic reductions in our lifetime risk for cardiovascular events, such as heart attack or stroke; and enjoy a better quality of life. Request this presentation.

Following the presentation, the audience will be able to:

  • Identify cardiovascular disease risk factors;
  • Understand the targets for each risk factor, and;
  • Identify practical steps toward to improving cardiovascular health.
  1. Risk-Factor Specific: The presentation can be tailored to focus on a specific range of risk factors:
  2. Know, Understand, Act with Brief Risk Factor Assessment: What does your risk factor profile look like? Using a risk factor assessment tool based on personalized measures (blood pressure, height, weight, age, diabetes status, smoking status), we will provide a brief estimation of each audience member’s cardiovascular disease risk. Following the collection of each person’s information, a brief risk factor profile will be created. Request this presentation

    The presentation will provide information on the following:
  • Identifying the connection of risk factors and cardiovascular disease;
  • Recognizing the targets for each risk factor;
  • Defining strategies to address each risk factor, and;
  • Identifying community options and resources to support strategies.

Note: Additional costs apply, with a maximum of 18 assessments completed in one hour.

Cardiovascular Disease Management

  1. Not Just an Incident: Even though we receive the best available care to treat and manage our heart conditions, cardiovascular disease is not curable. It is a chronic problem. Because the obvious effects and complications of cardiovascular disease, such as heart attack, tend to be single-“episode” phenomena, there is a tendency to treat the condition with an “out of sight, out of mind” attitude. Ignoring the problem leads to a worsening of disease. Learning about our risk factors and how to manage them is the best way to prevent future complications. Request this presentation

    Following the presentation, the audience will:
  • Understand different treatments for cardiovascular disease;
  • Learn how to live well with cardiovascular disease;
  • Recall the commonly prescribed medications;
  • Identify risk factors that affect cardiovascular health;
  • Recognize how to manage the risk factors, and;
  • List strategies and available community resources.
  1. Medication Management: Being diagnosed with cardiovascular disease often involves taking prescription medication. Medication is most effective when taken as indicated. However, only about 50% of individuals take their medications as prescribed. Request this presentation

    Following the presentation, the audience will:

  • Name common cardiovascular medications;
  • Understand the purpose of the medications;
  • State common side effects and strategies to manage side effects;
  • Recognize how to take medications safely and effectively, and;
  • Recall strategies to support an optimal medication regimen.

Women and Cardiovascular Disease

  1. Women's Hearts are Different: Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women, and yet many women are not aware of the threat.
