Sommaire 

Le Dr Buu-Khanh Lam est chirurgien cardiologue et directeur de la Clinique de chirurgie valvulaire à l’Institut de cardiologie de l’Université d’Ottawa. Il est également professeur agrégé de chirurgie à l’Université d’Ottawa.

Parcours 

Le Dr Lam a obtenu son doctorat en médecine de l’Université McGill, à Montréal, en 1994. Il s’est ensuite spécialisé en chirurgie générale dans le même établissement avant d’effectuer sa résidence en chirurgie cardiaque à l’Institut de cardiologie. Le Dr Lam a reçu en 2000 le titre d’associé du Collège royal des médecins et chirurgiens du Canada (FRCPC) en chirurgie cardiaque.

Grâce au soutien de la Fondation des maladies du cœur et des Instituts de recherche en santé du Canada, le Dr Lam a par la suite poursuivi sa formation en recherche clinique à la Cleveland Clinic Foundation à titre de chercheur-boursier de niveau postdoctoral. Il a également reçu une bourse internationale du Cleveland Clinic Heart Center, où il a obtenu une maîtrise en santé publique et épidémiologie, démontrant un intérêt particulier pour l’analyse avancée des résultats paramétriques. Il a aussi été chercheur clinique au Département de chirurgie cardiothoracique de la Clinique de Cleveland et a obtenu une bourse en chirurgie (interventions valvulaires et coronariennes complexes, techniques chirurgicales minimalement effractives de la valvule mitrale, chirurgie aortique et chirurgie de la fibrillation auriculaire).

Le Dr Lam est à la tête d’une initiative nord-américaine et internationale visant à promouvoir le traitement de la fibrillation auriculaire idiopathique à l’aide de techniques chirurgicales minimalement effractives. Il a été le premier chirurgien canadien à réaliser une ablation par thoracoscopie pour traiter une fibrillation auriculaire idiopathique et forme d’autres chirurgiens canadiens à cette technique.

En tant que directeur de la formation médicale de premier cycle en chirurgie à l’Institut de cardiologie, il a réorganisé le programme de formation en redéfinissant les objectifs, le matériel pédagogique, le contenu des séances consacrées à l’enseignement et les mécanismes d’évaluation et de rétroaction. Cette stratégie a permis d’augmenter le nombre de stages au choix et à option demandés par les étudiants.

Intérêts cliniques et de recherche 

Sur le plan de la recherche clinique, le Dr Lam a divers intérêts : l’analyse des résultats de la chirurgie valvulaire, l’informatique médicale, les options thérapeutiques dans la prise en charge de la régurgitation mitrale ischémique, la fibrillation auriculaire et les effets de la simulation en pédagogie chirurgicale.
