Le Dr Benjamin Chow est professeur de médecine (cardiologie et médecine nucléaire) et de radiologie à l’Université d’Ottawa.

Le Dr Chow est cardiologue clinicien et chercheur clinicien à l’Institut de cardiologie de l’Université d’Ottawa, où il dirige le Service d’imagerie cardiaque (échocardiographie, tomodensitométrie ou TDM cardiaque, imagerie par résonnance magnétique ou IRM cardiaque, cardiologie nucléaire, tomographie par émission de positons ou TEP cardiaque, laboratoire des épreuves d’effort et radiologie cardiaque). Il y codirige également le Service de radiologie cardiaque (TDM, IRM et radiographies).

Par ailleurs, le Dr Chow dirige la cellule d’innovation qu’est le Consortium de recherche sur l’imagerie cardiovasculaire non effractive.

Parcours

Benjamin Chow a obtenu de l’Université Queen’s de Kingston, en Ontario, son baccalauréat en sciences de la vie, avec distinction, en 1992, et son doctorat en médecine, en 1996. Il a été admis comme associé du Collège royal des médecins et chirurgiens du Canada (FRCPC) en médecine interne en 2000 et en cardiologie en 2002. Il a parfait sa formation en cardiologie nucléaire et en TEP cardiaque à l’Institut de cardiologie de l’Université d’Ottawa. Par la suite, il a été scientifique invité au Massachusetts General Hospital, à Boston, où il s’est rodé à la TDM cardiaque. Il a pris ses fonctions de cardiologue à l’Institut de cardiologie de l’Université d’Ottawa en 2003.

Le Dr Chow, qui siège au comité de rédaction de la revue Journal of the American College of Cardiology (IF:15.343), participe à la planification de réunions scientifiques internationales (American Society of Nuclear Cardiology, International Congress of Non-invasive Cardiac Imaging, Congrès international de cardiologie). Mondialement reconnu pour sa contribution à la science et aux soins cliniques, il a reçu les titres de Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, Fellow of the Society of Cardiovascular Computed Tomography et Fellow of the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology.

Benjamin Chow a été reconnu pour sa contribution à la pratique clinique, à la recherche et à l’enseignement en cardiologie. En 2006, la Faculté de médecine de l’Université d’Ottawa lui a décerné le Prix du jeune professeur. Cette distinction est remise chaque année à une personne qui a contribué de façon exceptionnelle à l’enseignement et à la recherche. En 2011, le Dr Chow a reçu le Prix de distinction décerné par la Faculté de médecine de l’Université d’Ottawa. Ce prix est décerné aux membres du corps professoral qui se distinguent dans leurs fonctions, qui ont fait des contributions professionnelles exemplaires à la Faculté, dont le travail a rehaussé considérablement l’image de la Faculté et qui ont dépassé les exigences de leur poste ou de leur profession. Il a reçu le prix universitaire annuel décerné par l’Organisation des médecins-enseignants de l’Institut de cardiologie de l’Université d’Ottawa pour la recherche en science clinique en 2012 et, en 2013, le Prix du chercheur de l’année en sciences cliniques décerné par l’Institut même.

Champs d’intérêt cliniques

Le Dr Chow jongle activement avec des responsabilités cliniques multiples en soins cardiaques critiques, en imagerie cardiaque (TDM cardiaque, cardiologie nucléaire et TEP cardiaque) et en cathétérisme cardiaque.

Champs de recherche

La recherche du Dr Chow met l’accent sur : 1) l’établissement de nouvelles modalités ou techniques pour l’imagerie cardiaque et 2) la validation de l’approche thérapeutique par l’imagerie cardiaque. Bien qu’elle incorpore toutes les techniques d’imagerie de pointe (TDM cardiaque, cardiologie nucléaire, TEP cardiaque et IRM cardiaque), sa recherche porte principalement sur la tomodensitométrie cardiaque (TDM).
