Le Dr Harry Lapierre est chirurgien cardiologue clinicien adjoint et coordonnateur de la Clinique de chirurgie valvulaire (Réseau Télémédecine Ontario) à l’Institut de cardiologie de l’Université d’Ottawa.

Parcours

Le Dr Lapierre a obtenu un baccalauréat en microbiologie de l’Université de Montréal en 1989, puis un doctorat en médecine en 1994. Il a ensuite été en résidence et en formation postdoctorale dans différents hôpitaux affiliés à l’Université de Montréal et à l’Université McGill, à Montréal ainsi qu’à l’Université de Toronto.

Au cours de sa formation postdoctorale à Toronto, il a réalisé plus de 650 opérations à cœur ouvert représentant tout le spectre de la chirurgie cardiaque chez l’adulte (pontages coronariens avec et sans pompe, opérations de la valvule mitrale y compris sa réparation, remplacements valvulaires aortiques, maladies de l’aorte, implantation de stimulateurs cardiaques et pose de défibrillateurs automatiques implantables).

Il participe à un programme de l’Institut de cardiologie visant à promouvoir les techniques d’ablation minimalement effractives dans le traitement de la fibrillation auriculaire idiopathique. Une vingtaine d’interventions ont été réalisées avec un taux de succès avoisinant les 80 pour cent. À titre de coordonnateur de la Clinique de chirurgie valvulaire, il s’assure que tous les patients porteurs d’une prothèse valvulaire font l’objet d’un suivi et d’un traitement conformément aux plus récentes lignes directrices et que les patients dont la prothèse est dysfonctionnelle sont réadmis rapidement pour être traités. Ses échanges réguliers avec les médecins traitants favorisent la prise en charge optimale des patients atteints de valvulopathies congénitales ou d’affections liées à leur prothèse valvulaire.

Le Dr Lapierre assure en outre la formation d’assistants en chirurgie (trois médecins) et supervise deux membres du personnel infirmier dans le cadre du programme RNFA.

Intérêts cliniques et de recherche

Le Dr Lapierre et le Dr Marc Ruel sont à l'origine de la première série mondiale de pontages aortocoronariens minimalement effractifs ; selon cette façon de procéder, toutes les régions du cœur peuvent faire l'objet d'un pontage aortocoronarien non effractif grâce à une thoracotomie gauche mesurant de 5 à 7 cm, et ce, sans utiliser un appareil de circulation extracorporelle.

Le Dr Lapierre s'intéresse également à la transplantation cardiaque et aux dispositifs utilisés dans les cas d'insuffisance cardiaque (Heartmate II, Thoratec, Impella RD, LD et LP).
