Pipe, Andrew

Andrew Pipe, M.D., est professeur à la Faculté de médecine de l’Université d’Ottawa. Il a auparavant été chef de la Division de prévention et de réadaptation de l’Institut de cardiologie de l’Université d’Ottawa, où il poursuit ses activités cliniques et ses travaux de recherche. Il a obtenu son diplôme de médecine à l’Université Queen’s en 1974.

Le Dr Pipe est le plus éminent spécialiste de l’abandon du tabac au Canada. Il a joué un rôle de premier plan dans la mise au point, à l’Institut de cardiologie, du Modèle d’Ottawa pour l’abandon du tabac, modèle largement répandu de nos jours.

Le Dr Pipe mène actuellement des recherches cliniques en vue d’évaluer de nouvelles techniques d’abandon du tabac, des stratégies conçues pour favoriser la pratique régulière de l’exercice et de nouvelles initiatives visant à prévenir les maladies cardiovasculaires.

Le Dr Pipe a fait des présentations dans plus de 30 pays et est fréquemment consulté sur des sujets liés au tabagisme, à l’abandon du tabac, au dopage dans le sport, ainsi qu’à l’activité physique et à la santé.

Outre ses responsabilités cliniques, le Dr Pipe s’intéresse très activement aux sports et à la médecine sportive depuis de nombreuses années. Douze fois médecin aux Jeux olympiques, il est médecin de l’équipe canadienne masculine de basketball depuis 1978. Intronisé au Temple de la renommée olympique du Canada, il a présidé le Centre canadien pour l’éthique dans le sport, de sa fondation jusqu’en 2003.

Le Dr Pipe a reçu le Prix pour le sport, la santé et le bien-être décerné par le Comité international olympique et a obtenu des diplômes honorifiques de l’Université Queen’s (LL. D.), de l’Université Brock (D. Sc.) et de l’Université de Guelph (D. Sc). Ancien vice-président du conseil des fiduciaires de l’Université Queen’s, il a été fait membre de l’Ordre du Canada en 2002.

Intérêts cliniques et de recherche

Sur le plan de la recherche, les champs d’intérêt du Dr Pipe portent principalement sur l’abandon du tabac, la performance clinique des valvules cardiaques artificielles, l’adaptation cardiovasculaire à l’exercice et l’usage de drogues dans le sport. Il participe actuellement à des recherches cliniques afin d’évaluer de nouvelles techniques d’abandon du tabac, des stratégies conçues pour favoriser la pratique régulière de l’exercice et de nouvelles initiatives visant à prévenir les maladies cardiovasculaires.
