Le Dr Fraser Rubens est chirurgien cardiologue à l’Institut de cardiologie de l’Université d’Ottawa et professeur à la Division de chirurgie cardiaque à l’Université d’Ottawa.

Parcours 

Originaire de Kingston, en Ontario, le Dr Rubens a obtenu son diplôme de médecine de l’Université Queen’s en 1985. Après avoir terminé sa formation en chirurgie à Ottawa, il poursuit sa formation en recherche, grâce à une bourse du Conseil de recherches médicales du Canada, au Département de pathologie de l’Université McMaster, et obtient une maîtrise en sciences pour ses travaux sur les thromboses et les appareils cardiovasculaires. En 1992, le Dr Rubens est de retour à Ottawa pour terminer sa formation en chirurgie cardiothoracique. Il est admis au Collège royal des médecins et chirurgiens du Canada en 1990 à titre de chirurgien général, et en 1994, à titre de spécialiste de la chirurgie cardiovasculaire et thoracique. En 2006, il est promu au rang de professeur titulaire au Département de chirurgie.

Le Dr Rubens a mis sur pied un programme canadien de traitement chirurgical de l’embolie pulmonaire chronique ‒ le deuxième en importance en Amérique du Nord ‒ qui a profité à plus de 180 patients à ce jour. Le programme reçoit d’ailleurs des demandes de consultation de tout le Canada et est considéré comme un centre d’excellence par la province de l’Ontario. Le Dr Rubens possède une vaste expérience de la chirurgie à effraction minimale et d’un nouveau traitement chirurgical pour les patients à haut risque devant subir une intervention cardiaque; il a été un pionnier dans l’utilisation de plusieurs techniques chirurgicales à Ottawa, dont le pontage radial, le pontage coronarien sur l’aorte thoracique descendante, le pontage gastro-épiploïque, la chirurgie valvulaire sans endoprothèse, la greffe artérielle en Y, la canulation des artères auxiliaires, la squelettisation de l’artère thoracique ainsi que les nouvelles techniques d’intervention à cœur battant. Reconnu à l’échelle nationale comme chef de file en revascularisation artérielle multiple, le Dr Rubens a effectué plus de 1 400 greffes bilatérales de l’artère mammaire interne, dont 1000 par squelettisation.

Ses recherches ont pour but d’améliorer les résultats des patients qui subissent une intervention chirurgicale à l’aide d’un cœur-poumon artificiel. Le Dr Rubens a agi comme chercheur principal de plusieurs projets subventionnés par les Instituts de recherche en santé du Canada et la Fondation des maladies du cœur et de l’AVC, à l’issue d’un processus d’évaluation par les pairs. Il a également été critique scientifique interne pour la Fondation des maladies du cœur et de l’AVC du Canada. Auteur de plus de 200 articles, résumés et chapitres de monographies révisés par les pairs, il a en outre été invité à donner plus de 80 conférences sur la pathophysiologie de la circulation extracorporelle, l’embolie pulmonaire chronique et la conservation du sang, tant au Canada qu’à l’étranger. Membre de la Société canadienne de cardiologie, de l’American Heart Association, de la Society of Thoracic Surgery, de l’American College of Surgeons, de l’American Association of Thoracic Surgery et de la Canadian Society of Cardiac Surgeons, le Dr Rubens est également membre du comité de rédaction du Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery et rédacteur en chef adjoint de la revue Perfusion. Il a dirigé le programme de formation des résidents en chirurgie cardiaque de l’Université d’Ottawa de 2005 à 2016 et a reçu de nombreux prix récompensant son engagement, ses activités de mentorat et ses techniques d’enseignement novatrices. Lauréat du Prix du directeur de programme de l’année du Collège royal des médecins et chirurgiens du Canada en 2015, le Dr Rubens est nommé directeur, expérience patient par le Département de chirurgie de L’Hôpital d’Ottawa en janvier 2016.
