Jairo Tavares Nunes, MD, is a cardiologist at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, where he specializes in advanced heart failure and heart transplantation, and an assistant professor at the University of Ottawa.

Background

Dr. Nunes completed his medical education at the University of Santo Amaro in São Paulo, Brazil. He went on to complete residencies in internal medicine at the University of São Paulo and in cardiology at the Heart Institute (Instituto do Coração – InCor) of the University of São Paulo, where he also trained in advanced heart failure and heart transplantation. He then pursued a clinical and research fellowship in clinical trials at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre at the University Health Network in Toronto, followed by fellowships in advanced heart failure and transplantation and in echocardiography at the same institution.

His leadership experience includes serving as Lead Echocardiography Fellow, Lead Heart Failure Fellow, and Lead Cardiology Fellow at the University of Toronto, across University Health Network and Mount Sinai Hospital. He also served as Lead of the Core Cardiology Residency Program at the Heart Institute (InCor), University of São Paulo, and as a Clinical Event Adjudicator for the PISCES trial, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2025.

His awards and honours include the John Ross Fellow Leadership Award from the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, University Health Network and Mount Sinai Hospital, and the Carl and Ethel Ritchie Research Support Grant, also from University Health Network and Mount Sinai Hospital. He also received a Certificate of Honour for Merit in the Fight against COVID-19 from the Crisis Committee at Hospital das Clínicas, Faculty of Medicine, University of São Paulo.

Research and clinical interests

Dr. Nunes is part of the Heart Institute’s advanced heart failure and heart transplant program, where he cares for people experiencing heart failure, including those who may need a heart pump or a heart transplant. He also interprets echocardiograms to help diagnose heart conditions and guide treatment decisions.

Dr. Nunes’s research focuses on improving treatment and outcomes for people with heart failure. He uses clinical trials, large health databases and studies that pool results from many trials to find out which treatments work best in everyday practice. He has served as a site co-investigator in more than 10 multicentre studies of cardiovascular therapies. His work also explores what predicts recovery of heart function, using heart imaging and blood tests (biomarkers). In addition, he is interested in digital tools and remote care, such as whether short daily voice recordings can detect early signs of worsening heart failure, and how artificial intelligence can help clinicians use recommended medications and find patients who may be eligible for research studies.
