Maria Lopez Laporte, MDCM, is a cardiologist at the Ottawa Heart Institute. She is also appointed as an assistant professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa.
Dr. Lopez Laporte is the director of cardio-obstetrics clinic at the Ottawa Heart Institute, where she leads clinical, educational, and scholarly activities for the advancement of cardiovascular care of women before, during, and after pregnancy.
Background
Dr. Lopez Laporte obtained her medical degree from McGill University in 2018 and was named to the dean’s honour list. She completed residency training in internal medicine at McGill University and in adult cardiology at the Ottawa Heart Institute. She completed a fellowship in adult echocardiography (Level III) at the Ottawa Heart Institute. She worked as a cardiologist in cardio-obstetrics clinic at The Ottawa Hospital (general campus) in 2025, before joining the Division of Cardiology at the Ottawa Heart Institute in 2026.
Dr. Lopez Laporte is a member and local lead for the Canadian Cardio-Obstetrics Network. She is a member of the Canadian Women’s Heart Health Alliance and served as a member of its executive steering committee from 2024 to 2026. She has been an active member of the Ottawa Model for Smoking Cessation since 2024 and serves on the Canadian Cardiovascular Society smoking cessation working group.
Dr. Lopez Laporte received the Kaufman-Chan Fellowship in Cardiac Imaging for her work investigating echocardiographic predictors of pregnancy outcomes. She was also the recipient of the Dr. Evan Patrick Award in 2025, recognizing cardiology residents who exemplify outstanding compassion and dedication to patient care.
Research and clinical interests
At the Ottawa Heart Institute, Dr. Lopez Laporte’s area of focus is cardiovascular disease in pregnancy. She also has a community practice at Capital Cardiology, where she provides care in general cardiology, cardio-obstetrics, and echocardiography.
Dr. Lopez Laporte’s research interests include cardiac disease and echocardiography in pregnancy, as well as knowledge translation and medical education initiatives in cardio-obstetrics.
