Lucas C. Godoy, MD, PhD, is a general cardiologist at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute and an assistant professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa.
Background
Dr. Godoy completed his medical education and residency in internal medicine at the Federal University of São Paulo, followed by a cardiology residency at the Heart Institute (Instituto do Coração – InCor) of the University of São Paulo in Brazil. He then pursued fellowships in general and nuclear cardiology and cardiovascular prevention at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre at the University Health Network in Toronto, where he also completed a research fellowship in clinical trials. Dr. Godoy holds a Doctor of Philosophy in clinical epidemiology and health care research from the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto.
Research and clinical interests
Dr. Godoy’s research focuses on finding better ways to prevent and treat heart disease, especially in people who also have diabetes. He studies how different treatments – mainly open-heart surgery or less invasive percutaneous procedures using stents – compare in terms of safety and effectiveness. To do this, he uses data from both clinical trials and large health databases, applying advanced analytical methods to understand what works best in real-world settings.
Dr. Godoy sees patients in the general cardiology clinic, where he focuses on heart and blood vessel conditions such as hardening of heart arteries (coronary atherosclerosis), high cholesterol, and problems affecting the aorta. He also helps patients prevent heart disease through personalized risk assessment and prevention strategies.
