Andres F. Miranda-Arboleda, MD, is a cardiologist and cardiac electrophysiologist in the Division of Cardiology at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. He is also an assistant professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa.
Background
Dr. Miranda earned his medical degree from the Faculty of Medicine at the Universidad de Antioquia, his alma mater, in Medellín, Colombia, in 2011, where he also completed his training in internal medicine and cardiology. In 2021, he moved to Canada to pursue a two-year fellowship in adult cardiac electrophysiology at Queen’s University in Kingston. He then completed an additional two-year fellowship in adult clinical cardiac electrophysiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital of Harvard Medical School in Boston, USA, with a focus on clinical research and advanced techniques for the ablation of complex cardiac arrhythmias and the implantation of novel cardiac rhythm devices.
Dr. Miranda is an active member of the Canadian Cardiovascular Society’s Planetary Health Group. He leads the Emerging Leaders Program of the Interamerican Society of Cardiology (SIAC) and is a member of the SIAC Chagas Council.
His contributions to medical education and patient care have been recognized with honours. In 2015, he received the Merit Award in Postgraduate Medical Education from the Universidad de Antioquia. In 2022, he was recognized for outstanding patient care at Queen’s University. In 2024, he was awarded the George Mines Travelling Fellowship by the Canadian Heart Rhythm Society, an award supporting future leaders in the field of electrophysiology in Canada.
Research and clinical interests
Clinical
Dr. Miranda’s clinical practice encompasses the management of simple and complex arrhythmias, including atrial fibrillation and ventricular arrhythmias, with a special interest in premature ventricular contractions. He also specializes in cardiac implantable electronic devices, including transvenous and leadless pacemakers, implantable cardioverter defibrillators, and cardiac resynchronization therapy.
Research
His research focuses on improving outcomes and techniques for catheter ablation of atrial and ventricular arrhythmias, including premature ventricular contractions, and on the cardiovascular impact of neglected tropical diseases, particularly Chagas disease.
