Camila Machado de Souza, MD, PhD, is a cardiac anesthesiologist at the Ottawa Heart Institute and an assistant professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine at the University of Ottawa.
Background
Dr. Machado de Souza completed her medical degree and anesthesiology residency, at the Federal University of São Paulo in Brazil, where she also earned her PhD in knowledge translation.
She subsequently completed fellowship training in perioperative echocardiography and thoracic anesthesia at the University of Ottawa, and cardiac anesthesia at the University of Manitoba. Most recently, she completed advanced fellowship training in structural heart imaging at Harvard Medical School, where she also served as a clinical instructor and cardiac anesthesiologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
Dr. Machado de Souza joined the Ottawa Heart Institute in 2026. Prior to returning to Ottawa, she held several academic and educational leadership positions at the University of Manitoba, including fellowship director for cardiac anesthesia and program director for thoracic anesthesia.
Research and clinical interests
Dr. Machado de Souza’s clinical and academic interests include cardiac and thoracic anesthesia, perioperative echocardiography, structural heart interventions, and medical education. Her areas of interest include the use of advanced echocardiographic imaging to guide structural heart procedures and the development of education in cardiovascular anesthesia and perioperative echocardiography. Her academic work has also included perioperative management and protective ventilation strategies in thoracic surgery.
