Garuba, Habibat

Dr. Habibat Garuba is a cardiologist at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, and the Ottawa Hospital, General Campus. She is also appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ottawa.

Background

Dr. Habibat Garuba graduated from the University of Toronto Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy (First Class Honours). She became a licensed pharmacist prior to her entry into medical school. She graduated from medical school at Queen’s University in 2012, receiving the Medal in Internal Medicine. She completed her residency in internal medicine at the University of Ottawa in 2015 where she served as Chief Medicine Resident from 2014 to 2015 and won the CanMEDS Communicator Award in 2014. She subsequently completed a fellowship in adult cardiology at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute in 2018, followed by a fellowship in adult echocardiography (level III) at the Heart Institute in 2019. She joined the Division of Cardiology in 2019.

Research and clinical interests

Dr. Garuba’s areas of interest are in echocardiography for structural heart disease, cardio-oncology, cardiac disease in women, and global health cardiology/cardiac disease management in resource-limited settings.
