Higginson, Lyall

Dr. Lyall Higginson is a clinical cardiologist in the Division of Cardiology at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute and Professor of Medicine at the University of Ottawa.

Background

Dr. Higginson received his medical degree from McGill University Medical School in 1971. He was certified as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in Internal Medicine in 1976 and Cardiology in 1977.  Dr. Higginson is a former Director of the Cardiology Division at the Heart Institute and a past president of the Canadian Cardiovascular Society (CCS).

Dr Higginson is committed to undergraduate and graduate medical education and has been an active professor and mentor throughout his career. He was recognized for his commitment to teaching in 2006 when he received the Distinguished Teacher Award from the CCS

In 2012, Dr. Higginson received both the Canadian Cardiovascular Society Annual Achievement Award and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in recognition of his outstanding contributions to Canada over the course of his career.

Research and clinical interests

Dr. Higginson’s clinical and research interests include treatment of myocardial infarctions and patient outcomes, pharmacological intervention, the Heart Institute’s STEMI program, cardiac rehabilitation, quality of patient care, smoking cessation, and undergraduate and postgraduate education.
